Grander at the Cape Verde Islands

Heiko Steinmetz caught grander blue marlin in Cape Verde Islands:

2 days ago big game angler Heiko Steinmetz weighed a 1012 lbs blue marlin in Cape Verde Islands fishing on his private boat. Heiko fished a great season and released again over 100 atlantic blue marlin in 2009, best day 12 blues out of 27 strikes. His grander is the biggest marlin caught in the last 3 years in Cape Verde. Congratulations!!!

Here is Heiko's story:

The grander ate a "BWF Grander 1238" lure from bluewaterfishing on the short rigger. The big one always come when you don't expact it! She nearly spooled me on the first run but the young man I teached running my boat when I am sitting in the fighting chair did a great job and chased the fish forward with over 20 knots. I gained line back constantly and after 20 min the marlin stopped running and stayed just 50 meters under the boat. It took me an other 15 minutes with 65 pounds of drag to lift the heavy fish and my mate grabbed the leader and brought it in reach of the gaff. I left the chair and was able to set a flying gaff and the huge marlin was alongside the boat. When I measured her massive tail girth of 21,5 inch I hoped she can break the magic 1000 pounds mark. Back on the weighing station she did, even with an empty stomach the marlin weighed 1012 lbs. The biggest marlin out of the 350 blues I caught so far and my first grander! I was sooo happy and made a nice party that night. The fish was donated to the local hospital.

And here are the impressive pictures:

Wow, what a wonderful fish. And an incredible achievement with just the angler and an inexperienced crewman on board.

And there's that magic number, 20, again. Many of the skippers who've caught 'grander' Blues will tell you that a fish where the circumference of its tail root is 20 inches or more it's going to make at least 1000lbs on the scales. Brinkmanship with Heiko's fish but he did note that its stomach was empty.

Wow, what a beautiful catch. :applaus: This is a real monster marlin :P

Congratulations Heiko to this great achievement!! I just tried to imagine how heavy this grander would have been with a nice yellofin tuna and some dorados in his mouth. I am a bit jalous, fished Cape Verde in July as you caught big marlin last year off season but didn't have your luck. Keep on going..

Und nun auf Deutsch:
Ich bin mächtig beeindruckt. Heiko setzt ein Signal für die maximalen
machbaren Superfische.

:sehrgut:

Bons ventos e boa pesca. Mui cordialmente,
