In memory of Big Fish

Fantastic reading so far and here is another to share

In the mid to late nineties I did a trip to Mauritius with the late Charles Norman and over there met some members from a European group (think they are called the Viertigtal Verein or something similar) who annually have a meet at River Noire.

On this specific trip I was shown a video taken by the wife of one of the anglers, who on the previous year's trip, caught his dream fish, easily 2000lb, which in the dying moments of a protracted fight, was devoured piece by piece by a pack of sharks that continued to take huge bites out of the fish untill basically just the head and skeleton was left.

She had beautifull video of this and maybe someone else remember her or the incident.

It would be great, now that we have the advantage of the internet, if someone could find and post this footage for others to see.

Hi Kas,

yes this would be fantastic. We have a lot of Mauritius-Angler here. I will ask my friend Stephan Kreupl and Robert Rein. They fish in Mauritius since many, many years. Maybe I have success with my searchings....

Biggest marlin

I can't remember where it was that I read this. I read many fishing journals and publications but the largest marlin ever caught (to date) was caught by a Japanese longliner. In typical fassion, they gutted it and also cut the head and tail off. Due to that, the weight of the marlin is only estimated. The estimated weight of this Pacific blue marlin was 3500 lbs.

And I think the equally interesting thing, although it's not replicated in game fishing captures, is that the biggest Marlin always seem to be Blues rather than Blacks. I suspect those big Blacks are easier targets aggregated over shallowish reef structures whereas the Blues are normally out there shadowing the shoals of pelagics.

Hi Dick,
at first, many thanks for registering and welcome on board. Yes, I certainly can help you. I will search a good picture for you from a blue marlin.

Not the BIGGEST, but the current IGFA All-Tackle records

I know in this thread we've discussed (and speculated) just how large Marlin can grow. In that it may also be of interest here's a link showing images of the IGFA's current All-Tackle records - http://www.marlinmag.com/species/blue-ma…1000086332.html . Um ... you can see just how short they are of some of those estimates!

Whilst not an All-Tackle record there's a great link showing video footage of an estimated 12/1300lb Black Marlin initially hooked on 50lb class tackle at the bottom of that article - http://www.marlinmag.com/video.jsp?bclid…tid=40296049001 .

This post has gone quiet for some time now.

is there anybody out there who knows the anser to, or the link to literature regarding the following question:

At what age or size does a female blue marlin stop to produce healthy egs? There is a lot of debate about NOT killing grander fish because of their supposed HUGE breeding capability....

Any scientific info out there anybody?
