"Shy III" sank on Ascension Island

Hi guys,

an accident happens at Ascension Island with the famous boat "Shy III". During the works from getting the boat from the hanger to the water the accident happened and the boat sank.

Here is the dad video

SHY 3

That was desperately sad news Uwe. I understand that they were trying to lower Shy 111 in its cradle using the large crane that you can see on the Pier Head. Evidentially its hull caught the railings and it fell what is essentially 10 metres into the water. It looks a complete write-off.

Effectively now, apart from the local boats that will take you out fishing for the Yellowfin Tuna, Galapagos Sharks or Black Jacks, that only leaves Matthias' boat, Harmattan operating down there.

Here're some pictures taken on Shy back in 2003, soon after she relocated there from Ghana.

Hi Dave,

do you know anything about Matthias in 2009? He wrote in an german thread that he will fish at the Cape Verde Islands next year. Is then no boat available on Acension Island?

Chartering in Ascension Island

Hi Uwe
Harmattan is a 36' Rampage Express and I believe Matthias intends to continue chartering it on Ascension Island. I know one of the other Club members, Andy Fanter, will be fishing with him in November. Although Tuna especially are there literally throughout the year the 'main' Marlin season runs from November through to mid-April. (But you will perhaps remember that Denis Froud caught a 'grander', a fish of 1043lb, in July 2004 with Matthias.)

Isn't the boat that Matthias intends chartering from Sao Vicente, starting in April 2009, a 37' Bertram? I'd therefore assumed that he would run both operations, as the Ascension Marlin season finished so that at Cape Verde started.

With regards Ascension Island there are, in addition to Harmattan, local boats that can be chartered there for 'peanuts'. But game boats there are NOT. They tend to run less than a kilometre offshore and chunk for Yellowfin and will occasionally troll for Wahoo or fish for Galapagos Sharks or Black Jacks.

Hi Dave,
thanks for the explanation. Ok, Matthias runs two boats. Now I understand. He wrote, that he will drive the boat from the Canaries down to Cabo Verde.
Best wishes,
Uwe
