I’ve recently received a couple of e-mails from Olaf ‘the Grimmel’ Grimkowski, who those of us who’ve fished Cape Verde (
Andromeda), Ascension Island (
Shy 3) or Croatia (
Shy 2) might well have met.
It appears Olaf, together with Bonze and Marty (Bates) have de-camped, and are crewing on gameboats operating out of Horta on the island of Faial in the Azores. Any rate they’re now catching reasonable numbers of big Blues and reports (and excellent pictures) can be found on Olaf’s personal web site -
http://www.marlin-web.com/ - against Acores, or on this blog -
http://bluemarlin.skyrock.com/ or against the News section on Ian ‘the Yeti’ Carter’s site -

I can recall fishing there initially back in 1986 and for several years it was
THE place to fish. It then went through an extremely slow patch, perhaps the course of the Gulf Stream had slightly moved in that part of the world (?), before coming back now to its ‘former glory’. Interesting as well to see that the BIG fish are now also showing from Madeira in reasonable numbers. That was very much a characteristic of the two fisheries back in the late 80s/early 90s.
