I wanted to bring to the forum's membership - a number of whom, I'm sure, holiday (and fish) in the Canaries with their families - an attempt, apparently promoted by commercial interests, to restrict the numbers of days within a week that locals and tourists can sport fish, either from boats or the shore. This, I understand, follows on from legislation that prevents sport fishing boats fishing 'too close' to commercial fisherman.

Any rate there is a thread - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/sh…ad.php?t=219129 - on another forum I moderate with significantly more background information. It includes a link to a Spanish web site - http://www.marcanario.com/noticias/antep…restrictiva.php - that further explains the situation. As I suspect many of you do not speak Spanish fluently you may wish to use Google's free on line translation service - in English - http://translate.google.com/#es|en| - oder in deutscher Sprache - http://translate.google.com/#es|de|. Whilst, at times the translation may appear very stilted it does at least get over the substance of the argument.

It is obviously of real concern to local sportsfishermen and also everyone who relies on tourism in the islands.

Hi Dave,

thank you very much for that very helpful informations. Of course I translated the article in the German language.

Personally I think that this law will not pass in this form. I think it would be terrible for the holiday-industry at the Canaries. But, let´s see.

Best wishes,
uwe

Well, it looks like gratifying news. There has been so much adverse publicity surrounding the Canarian authorities attempts to implement this legislation that the proposal has now been dropped. But, as yet, we are still awaiting official confirmation.

Jason Pipe's latest post appears on this WSF forum thread.

Quoted

IT'S BEEN STOPPED !!!

This is unofficial but good enough for me as i know where it came from....

It will be announced soon though. They will be addressing some changes in the future and the most important thing is we have a representative at the table when they do. so nothing can happen behind our backs as the way has been in the past.

So sharpen your hooks and get out there !!!

Um ... interesting to see how politicians 'back down' when their attempts to enact legislation without the consent of the majority of their constituents are publicised.

Unrelated, but an ideal place to post this comment, Jason's father - a 50% shareholder in the Bocinegro charter business - intends to retire and sell his stake. (Bocinegro's a fully equipped 38' Bertram based in La Gomera.) Should you be interested there are further details and a contact e-mail on this thread - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/sh…ad.php?t=220359.

Hi Dave,

it´s good to hear that the things will get good. Do you know how Jason wants to sell his business?

Best wishes,

Hi Uwe
Unfortunately I don't know.

Speculating he may - well one option - just want to share the skippering and (some) deckhand duties on a 50/50 basis with another individual. (That would allow the individual, and Jason, to have some time off during the season.) On the other hand, and I'm aware of this arrangement with another boat, an individual could buy a 50% share in exchange for say several weeks fishing a year (at an agreed price) and a share in the profits of the business. That's something referred to as a 'sleeping partner'. For it to work of course the individual and Jason would have to agree on a level for Jason's salary. But there may well be other options that they could discuss.

Any rate the best approach for anyone interested would be to firstly have a look at his web site - http://www.teambocinegro.com/ to understand the fishing potential of La Gomera and then contact him by e-mail - bocinegro@hotmail.com

According to the last information, this law still on debate, and although there has been rumors that it will not go on, it seems we are far from it. The issue of the fishing days allowed to fish during the week, is on the table still. I can't understand why such a restriction, when part of our major industry is based on tourism, and sport fishing is not the reason of fish shortage in our waters.... There is something wrong somewhere....
