hi,

due to the water around sao nicolao turned into a dirty green the fishing turned into slow for the whole fleet fishing there after some really fantastic days too. i've made a round on HAPPY HOOKER 2 on saturday here out of sao vicente and tried the north first; blue water, little wind and baitfish, but couldn't find a blue, so i decided to go down to the south and have a look there. same conditions, blue water, baitfish, skippies and birds, but the only small fish was raised was by zak comming back from sao nicolao that afternoon.

less ferdy and bonze the fleet came back on saturday and when they headed out to sao vicente's south on sunday, the blues were back ! zak went 4 for 5 on blues and caught a spearfish too, calu went 1 for 3. so ferdy and bonze came back as quick as possible and yesterday every boat caught at least one blue.

today only ferdy and bonze are fishing and i could talk to bonze on HAPPY HOOKER 1 early before i went home and he was allready 1 for 1, and that was around 10.30 o'clock !

hi again,

to finish the fishing story from yesterday:

when CAPT. BONZE with his two dutch clients came back to mindelo harbour yesterday afternoon, the outrigger was bent by all the flags ! he ended up with 2 blues of 220 lbs & 330 lbs released and caught a wahoo. but the most interresting was the 4th catch: an in cape verde rare 113 kg BIG EYE THUNA !! all fish caught on his own "BONZE" lures. this lures work pretty well and lots of fish were caught allready here on them !

ferdy ended up with 2 blues caught.

hi uwe and the rest of the fishing world,

the pics with the big-eye thuna will follow as soon as i get the copies, what a great catch !

yesterday i had some russian clients for a one days fishing on HAPPY HOOKER 2 and we ended up in quite lumpy seas with 2 for 3, the smaller one was 220 lbs and the second 330 lbs, and pulled the hooks on a wahoo.

zak and marty on amelia were fishing also and saw some more fish, they scored a 3 for 8 and raised another 2 without getting a bite out of them.

Hi Berno,
well done with the pictures! It works. And thank you a lot for sharing with us. A very, very nice fish, really. A real surprised capture.
But much more impressive is the number and size of the actual captures at Cape Verde in these days! Well, I don´t think that there is an area where people have more success for marlin these days

I´m looking forward your next reports.
Thanks a lot,
Uwe

Ratio of Strikes to Releases

There’s an interesting point alluded to in Berno’s last post – the ratio of released fish to ‘hook ups’. And by ‘hook ups’ I mean those where you get the 100 to 200 metre runs from before the Marlin apparently ‘throws’ the hook. But has it actually been hooked?

From my limited experience of fishing Cape Verde I certainly found that that ratio - released fish to ‘hook ups’ – was somewhat low in comparison to other venues I’ve lure fished. Why? Are they solely, as we surmise, aggressive male fish slashing at lures with their bills, with the hook(s) purely catching on the bill or ‘lassoing’ it? You get the run and, as the fish turns to face the boat or jumps, the hook just slides off.

Obviously there is little to form a judgement from on that one day’s results, but ‘Bonze’ went ‘four for four’. Whilst two, the bigger fish, were in all probability females he did also get the two smaller fish.

Um …. so is there anything in his hook placement? You can see in the close up shot of the Big Eye that the trail hook is right at the back of the skirt, at the extreme limit within IGFA regulations. The hook he’s using is also somewhat smaller. Does that have any bearing on the ratio of ‘good’ hook ups? But then surely the ‘norm’ would be that these smaller fish would be slashing at the lure’s ‘eye’.

Then, if I look back at some comments made by one of our Club members – Andy Fanter - regarding his 2007 trip, he recounted a ‘not so memorable day’ of just two releases from 20 strikes! And that extended into the next day lasting for 24 strikes in total for – and to resort to the fishing vernacular – NADA! Subsequently experimenting though, Andy found that single hook rigs fished in conjunction with a Boone Sundance Jet seemed to work when these smaller fish were around.

All intriguing! I wonder if anyone else has any other views on how to convert these ‘abortive’ strikes into releases?

hmmm, hi again,

my mouse gone mad...........anyhow, good question on the hook up to catch ratio. will we ever find out how to hook and catch them all ? but the fact is; whether you fish dead baits, live baits or lures or a combi of that, YOU CAN NOT CATCH THEM ALL !!!!! that is a fact in any kind of billfish fishing. i believe that in a place like cape verde were i guess we have sometimes hundreds or thousand of marlin around in a limited area, they are here to feed. and when there are that many marlin, there are a hell lot more baitfish for them to feed on. maybe they are not really hungry and just play with our lures ?? some kind of competition between them ? even with dead baits they go for them but often enough don't keep the bait that long in their mouth to hook them up. even when the hook up ratio is slow, the fishing by itself is more exciting when you have action on the boat, or do you really prefer to fish for 10 days with the chance of maybe getting one bite ?

yesterday zak came home with three flags, the american 70something footer "dreaming on" caught also 3, one of 700+lbs and ferdy caught 1 of 3.

here's a different "catch report" from yesterday;

every boat scored a 100 % hook up ! 0 for 0............

few marlin were seen, but didn't bite. ferdy decided late afternoon to fish the shallow waters for wahoo and caught 4 of them. zak decided to go over to try santo antao but also only 2 wahoo.

captain simon bracey is back since yesterday too.

About the capoverdian blue marlin strike ratio…….. Berno has a lot more experience than me and mine are just ideas proven from only five years trolling in capoverdian waters, (but I have been chasing blue marlin in almost every part of the world anyway….) Every time I found a new fishery in capoverde (that means new population of marlin come in a local feeding area) their behaviour during first days are very aggressive towards lures.
That usually means crash strikes, wide mouth marlin , and hence good to excellent strike ratio and good hook ups. (If you are so lucky to be the first boat over there, sometimes you can end up with a 100%)
After a three-five days paradise time though , I wittnes marlin change their reaction to the lures., from an agressive feeding mode to a more shy hard to hook up preydriven mode .No more fish open wide and say aaahhh……Most of them playing lures with the bill….seems they don not want to eat/kill but only hurt and play. That is the time where hookups usually drop off (and sometimes is virtually impossible to catch one)Strategy??In this case in order I do the following: I change the color /head shape of the luresI reduce the size of the combo Hooks/lures, I slow the boat speed I change the hookigs from a stiff one to a loose double one trying to take advantage of the swinging back hook.I quit the spot looking for some other “new” fishery trying to find a new population of marlin still not hooked. Every of the previous methods are not effective 100% all the times but all of them saved me the fishing day sometimes. Generally I believe that the charter fleet in Mindelo fishes with big hooks and lures, maybe too big, The average marlin size over there are not so big so a medium to large lure is probably better for the hookups. But mixed up there is always some BIG girl around so I understand that if you target big fish……you have to increase the size of your weapons letting the small ones go. That is my two cent…. David
