Well done to Bonze. He's fishing well his first season skippering in a new location and there can't be anything better in the world than to have those fish coming to lures you made yourself. Great stuff. I can't believe it's been four years since we last met in Paihia in the Bay of Islands.

Good luck to all the skippers. What an awesome fishery Cape Verde is.

hi,

first to dave; only simon & me were and now bonze instead of me are tagging billfish in cape verde waters, we must have tagged some hundreds of fish during the last years. whenever you send the tag-cards back to the billfish foundation, you write the anglers and the captains name on it. but only the angler will be informed of a re-catch. so maybe some more fish were found again, but many of our clients just came here to catch one marlin for their lifetime, so i'm pretty sure those ones would not let me know if they got a re-catch report. we got so far only one client who sent me a copy of his recaught blue. we caught, tagged and released that estimated 120 kg blue on the 20th of may somewhen 3 or 4 years ago and that fish was caught again only 9 days later by a spanish longliner some 40 miles away from where we released it. as i allways said; most tagged fish will be caught again by longliners, but usually they don't send the tags in..............so i was really astonished to get that report from a longlining vessel !

strong winds again here, most boats fishing the lee of santo antao with quite some good success. up to 6 fish seen and up to 3 caught a day by some boats. 400 to 500 lbs seems to be the average size with some fish up to 800 lbs been faught but unluckily lost.

tight lines,

the strong winds are gone, the sea looks with only little winds much calmer and the water is dark clean blue around sao vicente. and the marlin are here in good numbers, most fish seen yesterday on the american boat, a total of 11 but only 2 caught. simon went 3 for 4, bonze went 3 for 4 with one of them approx 750 lbs, zak went 3 for ? the winds shall stay calm for the next days, so let's hope the fishing will improve.

hi everybody,

and another fantastic fishing day yesterday. flat and calm seas at the south bank of sao vicente, the average on every boat were 4 blues caught but bonze on HAPPY HOOKER 1 caught 6 with one of 600 lbs........as you might imagine, our uk client jonathan tried for marlin the past 10 years and never caught one ! for the last 4 days he never stopped smiling............

today its even more calm, so far no wind at all !! one boat had to come back this morning after he left the harbour. he broke his shaft yesterday and "repaired" it, but it broke again on the way to the fishing grounds this morning..........

Hello to all from Cape Verdes – A day to remember.
25. April. This is the info about our fishing with Neil and John. We caught 5 blues out of 8 strikes: 450lbs, on the Super Scugger, a 400 on the Hercules from Bonze Lures, two 300 lbs on the Wide Range, a 250 lbs on Super Plunger from Bart, and a 500 lbs on the Hooker. Total for their fishing was 13 blue marlins; - not bad for four days fishing. They will be back next year. Thanks to Neil and John.

26. April was the first day for Roger and Tom Bettle. We caught tree blues out off 8 bites:
600lbs caught on the Medium Plunger from Joe Yee, a 550lbs on the Hooker, and 350 on the Hercules from Bonze lures. In all a good start for our boys from England.

27. april. Breaking news! 15 blues caught out off 22 bites. All this fish was caught on lures.
300lbs, 500lbs, 250lbs, 400lbs, 300lbs, 550lbs, 425lbs, 400lbs, 250lbs, 350lbs, 300lbs, 175lbs, 250lbs, 450lbs, 300lbs. Four of this fish was caught on the Hooker from Mold Craft lures, two on the Medium Plunger from Joe Yee, one on the Pakula Lumo Sprocket, three on the Andromeda from Legend Lures, two on the Hercules from Bonze Lures and three on the Mini Chugger from Mold Craft lures.

I think that we probably are the first boat in the world to catch 15 fish in one days fishing on lures. The record is 20 or 21 fish in one single day caught some years a go from the Hooker on bait and switch. Captain at that time was Trevor Cookle. What a day!

Best regards to all and good fishing
Captain Zak Conde

Hi Berno

Marlin still in good numbers even if as usual a bit more shy and hard to hook up than previous days (small bastard male rats) .....the same old story.

Maybe better looking for new fishery somewhere.

Nobody in San Nicolau at the moment??

I believe Stephan Kreupl is going to held his friendly charity tournament at taraffal next days..Do you have any news about that?

hi david,

yesterday the fleet had some less bites but all boats caught 3 blues an average. ferdy left this morning to sao nicolao, they catch fish over there and the wheather forecast for sunday and monday doesn't look very friendly, so they might have luck over there and fish in the lee. winds up to 8 beaufort shall apear and that is a lot ! we'll see........

Berno

During your capoverdian fishing experience, did you find any sort of pattern that after a windstorm like that one is approching to Capoverde , green water could easily spread over the arcipelago?

and generally speaking , green water/blue water on Mindelo fishing banks are consequences of what? Current changement, seastorm, bad luck or what else?

and more important , do windstorms usually affect following days' fishing numbers and behaviour?

Did you find a kind of rule or , as usual in this kind of fishing , I should listen the magic word "sometimes yes and sometimes not"????

David

Ps Ferdy called me yesterday afternoon. He reported 1 from 3 on san nicolau water. Did Simon and Bonze do better on San Pedro banks?

Charity Cup at Sao Nicolao
