Flamingo, CR report

I was visited today by an old friend, Fred DeRewal and his son. Fred
and I go way back to when he owned Villas Pacifica and I was with
PanAngling. Fred and his son sold the Villas last year, but retained
the five boats, including the <$1i>Scorpion - 58ft Bertram. This boat
and <$1i>Good Dog stay in Flamingo; the <$1i>Bad Dog will be moving
down to Carrillo for the winter; and <$1i>Mad Dog and <$1i>Crazy
Dog will be running out of Quepos.

Admittedly, these two reports are late:

October 8, 2007 - "Fishing is a little slow, but if you want to do some

inshore fishing it's fair or compared to Florida or New Jersey I think you

can consider the fishing here pretty good. Bad Dog went fishing up at the Bat
Islands and landed 8 nice wahoo to 45lbs. She also had 12 dorado and 3
small tunas and she came back early, not bad for a Sunday morning.
<$1i>Crazy Dog fished the Catalina Island yesterday with 4 wahoo and
12 yellowfin tunas . The tuna is 25 to 35 lbs. We have always said
October is our slowest month, but as you can see it's not that slow.
The fishing south is very slow, the boys in Quepos tell us the rain is
so hard that boats are not going out. The same down in Golfito. The
good news is in just four more weeks the rain will be gone."

October 3. 2007 - "Bad weather, a lot of rain. Cheryl James from Upper

Black Eddy, PA went bottom fishing on the good dog yesterday and

brought back 4 nice red snapper 20 to 25 lbs. <$1i>Crazy Dog did just

as good on snapper in the morning and then went a little off shore and

landed 5 nice dorado, the largest about 50lbs. With the rain nobody

wanted to go the next 10 to 12 miles looking for marlin, but we know

they are there."

The 31ft "Dog" boats charter for $975/day; The <$1i>Scorpion charters for
$2,000 per day. Charter prices includes all trolling tackle, bait, boat
crew and lunches.

Bad Dog

Hi Al

This isn't by any chance Bad Dog is it? We saw this 'battlewagon' fishing on the Snapper banks just off the Bat Islands whilst fishing out of the Gulf of Papagayo in late August.

Flamingo is HOT!!

Fred said "I have been down to Puntanenas the past two weeks. We had to take the Scorpion out of the water and that is the only place with a lift large enough. When I arrived yesterday I talked to all our captains, and they all had good fishing reports. All boats are raising 5 to 10 sails a day and yesterday Good Dog had 15 sails and a marlin. All boats are hooking up at least one marlin on every charter and are also doining good with dorado. All our boats are here in Flamingo and as in the past our best sailfish season is June,July and August so it looks like we are off to a good start this season."

Capt. Fred from Club Villas Pacifica and the Dog Fleet has the following to report:

Our Flamingo season is starting up, so I will try to give you more reports. April was only fair for bill fish but they are starting to show up more in the past two weeks. Yesterday (25 May) Scorpion had 4 releases for 8 hook ups and Friday (23 May) Good Dog had 3 sails and 1 marlin and Bad Dog had 5 sails. Last week all boats did good on tuna fish, all in the 30 to 50 lb range.

Now that TS One E has passed thru the area, maybe fishing will be back to normal. After drenching CR with 38cm of rain, it is now TS Alma and is headed inland of Managua, Nicaragua. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/E…/142812W_sm.gif

Los Sueños: For the past week most of the boats have been fishing inshore for roosterfish, snapper and more. Today was much of the same but there were some boats running offshore to fish for the big game and first reports are the offshore bite was better. Captain Dave on the Miss Behav'in caught a couple roosterfish and a couple dorado. Captain RJ on the Predator caught 2 tuna, 2 rooster and 2 mahi mahi. RJ reported "the water was loaded with logs and was filthy greenish brown in color, but added "the live bait is thick on the inshore rocks". RJ said "he was catching 4 or 5 bluerunners on each sabiki cast." I heard rumors of a decent offshore bite and I am trying to confirm with Capt. Glen on the Bethina who just put his boat back in the water, after a major o/h on his shafts and struts. This boat flies - 35 wot!

Further up the coast in Flamingo - Capt. Sonny on the Wetass II reports: "two very slow days catching only small tunas and dorados the third day got a Marlin out of 3, 1 sailfish out of 4 and some tunas.

Yesterday out of Carrillo Sonny had 2 Sailfish out of 3 and 2 50 pounds Tuna. Today (still fishing) are catching 1 sail, raised a Marlin, 1 dorado and last time I heard from them they were into a nice school of Tunas."
