Old Grounds Flounder 6/5/2010

This is orignally Dan's report from our trip on Saturday.

******************
I didn't get too much sleep Friday night as the Capt Robbins Bass Barn trip come in very late to dock. But with some reports of tuna sighting we wanted to try to do a combo Bluefin / Fluke trip. Long story short we left a little late and it was foggy as well so we didn't get as far offshore as needed to see any tuna. Threw poppers a little and then ran back in the Old Grounds area.

We had a nice pick of them all day but it was not an insane bit, small concentrated pockets held fish. Sinkers came up surprisingly WARM, water surface temp was 67.02 at 11AM and 72.08 by 2PM!

Hot bait was Cape May Tackle's 6" Glow squid with pink spots (color #11) easily out producing everything. We cut the nose off the squid, pull it over the bucktail, drop of super glue. The bucktail is the "weight" and fished at the bottom, maybe 18" up is dropper loop with 3.5" Pink Squid and Gammy 4/0 Oct hook.

Second best was 4.8" glow squids in simple inline rig with trailer hooks and spinner blade.

Bait on table is fresh frozen shad and herring we caught just a few weeks ago in Delaware river, soft but excellent baits!

22"

27”

24”

You can make this "jig" yourself, just cut the nose of the squid, pull it over the bucktail, drop of super glue - done.

Bret Baker from OTI rods showing even after living in Texas he still remembers how to do it

4.8" Glow squid, simple basic rig

You certainly 'grow them BIGGER' in the 'States Bret - and this wasn't Texas - than our European Flounder. And they've got TEETH!

Interestingly, and I know it's a small sample, they, like ours, appear to metamorphosize from free swimming fry to mature flat fish with eyes on the right.

These are decent fish but definitely not monsters. 10-12lb fish up this way is a huge flounder - down in NC they are reported to get to about 18lbs!!! We are thinking of trying for them down there next month. But with tuna around, who knows. I was supposed to go bluefin popping today but it got cancelled, again :(

Yeah they've got some pretty wicked teeth - very aggressive predators as well. fun on some light tackle :). I do believe they start as a "normal" fish and then change into their flatfish selves. Nature is pretty wild.

By the way how was the Keys??

Florida Keys

.....

By the way how was the Keys??

Great Bret! There's a report here - Florida Keys - May 2010 - Marathon and Key West. It includes a link to Dave's photos on Flickr. The real 'toe to toe' stuff though was a 250lb Goliath without a butt pad. It took a full two weeks for the bruises to finally disappear.
