It's a fascinating thread to read fully and, although the numbers do sound absolutely unbelievable, I for one have no reason to doubt the report's credibility. The Brackmanns are so well known in the game fishing scene that I just can imagine they'd be part of any hoax.

As was mentioned some, but by no means all of the fish, were taken casting into bait balls with at least one 'still' from an underwater camera identifying over 20 Marlin in shot. Then it can just be a matter of getting baits in the water, hooking up, leadering and breaking off fish. Remember they got through 200 hooks, they weren't billing fish and retrieving hooks - given that 60 plus catch which had got them done there in the first place - they were after numbers and the record.

But I guess importantly I wanted to make the point that those catches just don't happen by accident. Remember also Stewart Campbell releasing 73 Bluefin Tuna in a single day in the winter of 1995 off North Carolina. And it was only last year that one of the boats from Iztapa, Guatemala got that unbelievable catch of Sailfish. (I'll try and find that thread and post the link.)

For others reading the thread though try and get to page 4 where the guy has reproduced, I think from a back edition of Marlin Magazine, an article by Dutch angler Jan Fogt of Big- Game Fishing's Most Amazing Feats . Some of those are also truly unbelievable.

Hi Dave,
I've been watching that thread on sportfisherman and thehulltruth for a while. My friends who live down there say it's possible, but only add they are "rat" stripeys. Meaning they are 50 to 70 lb fish. Backing into a bait ball isn't uncommon. George Woodward, my second best friend and world class angler, argued un-successfully with FinnSeeker who's only postings are on those two sites, says it can't be done. Not in the time alloted - of one fish every 2.2 seconds! Is it sportsman like - not really - most of the leaders never left the rod tip. You're fighting a 60 lb fish on 400 lb leader- so where's the sport? He's got everyone revved up about this to sell the video.

Hi all (especially Perez: hope to see u in Kenya next year:-)),

Intersting news and we all should believe it cause the sources are trustworthy!

BUT basically this simply cannot be done under normal circumstances...believe me!
Especially with 30lbs tackle...no way!

BUT what NORMAL means to me is fishing a boat with max. 3 anglers sim. and tagging the fish. I always have supported tagging not because of the "scientific" value but because of the simple fact that tagging means the fish is within gaffing range!

As Legend has written: Leader=Main Line! Hook the fish close to the boat, close the drag and give the leader a grap: Small wire circle (and this is what the Ecs are) either tears out or bends off or brokes: Marlin released!...next one! Not the way I like to fish!

But to be fair I have to confess i would have loved to join em this day and would have tried to fish very small line. I mean such a high amount of marlin offers a good opportunity to go for record not in numbers but in line class...especially with pitch bait!

Anyway its still an achievement!

MARC

I entirely agree with Al and Marc, it was solely 'joke' fishing with little regard for the welfare of the fish, but still possible. And, as Marc said, exciting to have been on the boat.

The '2.2 seconds' per fish though is a bit wide of the mark, someone using a calculator and getting the decimal point in the wrong place? Using Finnseeker's initial note it seems up to midday, from 8:30, they caught 100 fish in 3 1/2 hours, 210 minutes. Then after lunch, until 5:10 when the bite closed down, 310 minutes, they released the remainder. I guess though into that afternoon session you have to factor the 'down time', the trips to get bait.

Just to go back to that point about the Sailfish 'record' from Guatemala in 2006, here's the note:

"The Pacific coast of Guatemala
is justifiably renowned for its exceptional Sailfish fishing. But on Saturday, 11th March 2006 records didn’t just fall, they were shattered!

There was a huge concentration of fish off Iztapa with the bite, over the previous few days, gradually moving offshore to a point where it was centred some 17 to 20 miles off Porto Quetzal in some 1000ft of water. And to put it into perspective Captain Ron Hamlin on Captain Hook had, prior to the 11th, recorded five straight days of 50 plus releases.

But it got better! On that Saturday the Captain Hook had had an amazing 90 bites before midday, followed by another 92 in the afternoon. By the end of the day they had released 124 Sailfish! (The previous record had been 81 Sails.) All had been taken on 30lb line fishing trolled deadbaits on circle hooks.

And others in the fleet were not be outdone though. The party on Decisive – captained by Brad Philipps - released 51 Sails all on fly from 80 bites. But the group on the appropriately named Release – captained by Chris Sheeder - bested that with 57 releases from 78 bites to establish a new single-day fly record."

Hi Dave,
Herb Rosell from our company was on the Release that day and wrote the articles that appears on our website and later was published in Marlin Magazine. The owner of the Release, Jim Turner caught 54 sails and Herb caught 3 at the end of the day. He was taking photos so he wasn't really fishing. And, they got the fly back each and every time - never lost a fly in the process.

The clients on the Captain Hook with Ronnie that day are all very experienced anglers and it wasn't any stretch of imagination. Most boats fishing that day were in the 75-100 fish category.

But comparing Guatemalan Sailfish to "rat" Stripeys is a different ball-game. Where you can hook, fight and tag/release a Sail in ten or fifteen minutes, might take a half-hour on a Stripey. George asked Finn about how many were tagged, and he said NONE! Strictly a show for the audience. I won't be buying the video.

Ultimate Lady

Hi Al

What a superb day that Herb experienced! Unfortunately on the one occasion I fished Iztapa was just after a tropical depression had gone through and the fish were really spread out. It was a case of finding the blue water and turtles and then you found the Sails, although no where near the numbers you described. Um...perhaps one day I'll have to go back.

Just drifting back to Striped Marlin there’s an ‘battlewagon’, a 90 footer – Ultimate Lady - based in New Zealand (although it does fish the Black Marlin season off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef) that targets, amongst other species, big Swordfish and Striped Marlin from the Three Kings and
Whanganella Banks. Both places are rather remote locations! I believe their best day on Stripes, trolling & tagged, has been 21 –
http://www.ultimatelady.com/index.cfm/pa…s/ReportID/1538 But these fish were averaging nearly 300lbs in weight!

I'm sure they made a DVD of that day's fishing - I can't though find any reference to it on their web site. Perhaps one of the other posters may well remember the link? Might represent better entertainment that Finn's effort?

I don't have a link for the video, but I have seen 2 of their videos. Impressive numbers of large stripe marlin. Great action.

about the big catch--179 fish in a day. Why not? If you are running & gunning on them, going after the number, not the sport.

Not my way of fishing neither, but to each his own.

World record Number of Marlin

Hi dave I am Subscriber of the ´´Bluewater´´Boats and Sportfishing Magazin from Australia and bought the DVD Ultimate Lady ´´The Wanganella Banks´´about two Years ago from this Publisher. From all Videos I collected over the Years this is still today the most breathtaking one.Because it is a Trimaran they have three Fighting Platforms and had several Fights with up to 5 Marlins the same Time ! All Anglers from this Trip were top experienced Big Gamers and had these impressivly big Stripeys ( Average weight 300 Pounds !! ) within 10-15 Minutes at the Boat. All Fish were tagged and released in absolutely ´´green´´Condition as you can see on the Underwater Videos taken there. One of the Highlights is to see the poor Rest of a Stripey attacked by a Giant Calmar ,( Architeutis ) just the Head and the Tail from a 300 Pound Fish are left.Try to get it it is 100 Percent its Money worth.

Tight Lines Jan :)

Ultimate Lady DVD

Hi Jan and Rotowarriers

Many Thanks Gentlemen I've now ordered the DVD. Absolutely amazing that that Giant Squid attacked the last Marlin - terrifying creatures, shades of Jules Verne's 20000 Leagues under the Sea.

The only attack I've seen on a Marlin, a 400lb Blue, came from a huge Mako whilst fishing over the La Guaira Bank, off Venezuela. The Mako initially appeared literally alongside the boat and the crew were tossing small Tuna to it. It had no interest in them and sped after the Marlin which, on sensing it, coloured up, ran and tried to jump. Unfortunately it only got half out of the water before the shark literally 'raked' the whole of one side - the flesh was hanging off in shreds. From the crew's and my friends estimates in was in the 12 to 14' range, so probably well over 1000lbs.

Um ... unfortunately Uwe it demonstrates the very worst style of 'tournament' fishing to me. Certainly not my idea of fishing. If you look carefully they're back down on green fish and then popping the lightish leaders, leaving the fish with hooks in their jaws and trailing leader material.

Well, under such circumstances the record is worthless. You are absolutely right, Dave. And this is for me the explenation how they could catch so many fish in this time.
