Isla Mujeres Fly Record falls
Nassim Joaquin breaks a long-standing fly record:
After several years trying Nassim Joaquin of Cozumel Island, Mexico. And IGFA Representative for that island broke the one day record for Atlantic sails on the fly at Isla Mujeres, Mexico on February 1, 2010 with 12 Atlantic sails on the fly in a single day. He did it while flyfishing with Captain Anthony Mendillo and Mate Ruben Moguel on the Cabo 48 “Chachalaca.” The previous record was held for over five years by Joe Zimmer of Berlin, Maryland and Capt. Butch Cox of the Paul Mann boat “Prime Time” in 2005 with 10 Atlantic sails caught with the long rod in a day.
“I have been targeting this record for about 8 years already, doing an annual pilgrimage to Isla Mujeres hoping to be at the right place at the right time. I finally did. All my sails were caught on 20 pound tippet. And what is so amazing is that I caught all of them by freecasting! The baitballs of sardines Isla Mujeres is famous for were just everywere and sailfish were on them by dozens. I managed to frecast to all of those 12 sails. I did not catch a single fish by “trolling and teasing” method. I flyfish a lot for tarpon and bonefish and the only difference between those fish and the Isla Mujeres sails were 100 feet of water. It was an amazing bite in an extraordinary day. It is not easy to freecast with bluewater flyrods all day long. At the end of the day you need a new arm! But my Cam Sigler 14Wt and a sage 13 RPLX did the job with matching Tibor flyreels. As for flies you got to match the hatch with the baitballs. So we hit them with everything we had from the Cam Sigler “Captain Hook Fish Fly” in blue & white color, to Joe kononchik’s streamers and FPF from H20. It was the bite of a lifetime. And it was 100% team effort. Capt. Anthony Mendillo from “Kenn M” charters and Mate Ruben Moguel are a top crew. In just 2 days of flyfishing I caught a total of 18 Atlantic sails on the fly, they know what they are doing and I just can’t wait to fish with my amigos again.”
I can't wait until he gets a glimpse of hundreds of sails busting bait in Guatemala next year!
